Hi, I have used both uddeholm and sandvik as well as a number of other brands. I myself prefer sandvik as I have had bad experiences with uddeholm (could have been a bad batch though). Another good brand is called Diado (not sure of the spelling), about the same price and excellent steel to roll. My company has recently tried a new brand which seems harder than sandvik (we got it through a deal) and it seems quite OK, it is called Forestill. But I have only been running the saws for about a week. A good way of looking at it is that sandvik and uddeholm have been around for a long time, so there must be a reason for this...

Bad butt welds would most likely come from the person welding the saw, not the steel itself. No name brands, I agree, seem a bit cheap and nasty.
