Sawing Frozen Doug Fir and Hemlock.

It's that time a year again. I was wondering if there was anybody out there that would like to share their techniques/ methods that showed the best results, as far as saw work (frost notch, gullet shape/depth, etc.)

came from the frozen Norh to cut wood that was out of the water with "no frost" wrong
we have a 5' Quad our feed speed in 4" is 465 fpm as we increase our depth of cut to 10.6" we slow down 7' fpm the most we do slow down is 20'fpm in a 18" depth of cut which is 200' fpm in the frost. We grind in a frost tooth using a 1/8" wheel glued to a 5/8" wheel no paper so our frost tooth is not very big so far the saws are not snaking but we do loose tension and pull the backs

sawfin....do you mind sharing with me what your rim speed is on your bandmills?

It haas been awhile since i looked at the form but our rim speed is 10200

we have a 5' quad never had center cracks till lately we using a split guage .073th our wheel crown is 1.5mm tension in our saw is 50 with a hint of light the saws perform well but this center crack is problem not all the mills have this problem seems that #3 is where it starts and once a crack show up we shift it to #4 mill till we take it out of service. Looking for a solution

I run my bands at 8600 in frost with a frost notch made from a hard face wheel. We found it was important to make the notch top as level to the saw as possible. We get very litle sawdust froze to the cants.

The problem with the cracks could be cross line, dead strain, to much overhang or excessive strain.
