The tool you are talking about is actually made to be used on saws 4 inches and smaller, disposible type bands in the pallet industry.While this is a fine tool for such small saws I would not hang my hat on a strain reading if you are checking any saws wider than 4 inches.The way it is used is to load a band and mount the two bolt ends to the back of the saw,then strain it up it then measures the amount of stretch in the saw from strain down to strain up position.Given a particular saw of a certain gauge tends to have an average amount it will stretch before reaching full strain,the gauge is calibrated as such.
