I would have to agree that the Simonds/IKS merger will just put us all in a deeper bind. I've been fighting with Simonds for about two years now. Their saws have gone from almost perfect upon receipt to hardly worth messing with. I've just spent the last 4 hours leveling 2 right-out-of-the-crate saws. From all indications they no longer use sawfilers to build their saws. Apparently they are using off-the-street workers and try to teach them how to operate/maintain/adjust an auto bench.

As for the steel, I don't know if I've ever encountered Savdvik and haven't seen it etched into any saw steel in my 10+ years in the filing room. My orders always specify Uddeholm steel. Sometimes the saws are so marked, sometimes they are not.

Basically, my findings are that the manufacturers (Simonds and IKS) have reduced their quality control in an attempt to save money, and every new saw will show up with it's own 'personality'... and will have to be pampered for the rest of it's life.

Good luck guys!!! Would appreciate comments from others!
